I am a Canadian-born sculptor, working in clay, inks, oils, and paper.
My most recent body of work is entitled "You Get Me Closer to God," which is a quote from the Nine Inch Nails song "Closer." The series is composed of sculptures made of paper feathers resembling vast wings. The feathers are cut and hand-wired from the pages of antique and vintage Bibles in various languages and scripts, including from 1840s France, Civil War-era America, and Depression-era America. These books were cried on, prayed over, preached with, and entrusted with family stories and secrets. They have been marinated in generations of rich human emotion. There are few raw materials that come pre-soaked with more emotional content.
The wings also serve as a metaphor for their medium. They make explicit the resurrection theme, inherent in all found-media sculpture, of making something new out of something discarded. Further, destruction of a "holy" book is usually considered blasphemy but I wanted to render the destruction here as an act of transformation and beauty.
Other pieces in the series explore texts other than Bibles. For example, with "You Get Me Closer to God No. 5," I use the white pages of a telephone book. I wanted to take the anonymous names in a text with such fleeting life as a phone book and turn them into a permanent work, a memorial to nothingness.
